Villains threaten frequently, carrying out not all but certainly some of said threats, and much of the storyline is centered around the death of a well-liked character. The violence isn't over the top, per say, but it's definitely present. As for content, the swearing is mild enough to be accepted by a 12-year-old, if not slightly younger, but there are a couple of bits of innuendo that would go over a kid's head but certainly not a teen's. I was also fascinated by the themes of corruption, and what qualifies as such. The multiple plot lines are confusing, even for the girl who regularly explains things like this to her family members, but most if not all of them are satisfying at the end. I enjoyed this book! It's something of a slog, even for a fast reader such as myself, but I couldn't abandon it with the story at its peak.
